Joseph E. Kurtz, 60, has been named archbishop of Louisville by Pope Benedict XVI, according to an announcement today on the Vatican Web site.A press conference introducing Kurtz as the ninth bishop of the archdiocese will be held at 10:30 this morning at the Catholic Chancery.Kurtz, the bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Knoxville, Tenn., replaces Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, who submitted his resignation when he turned 75 in July but remained on the job until his successor was appointed.A Pennsylvania native, Kurtz was appointed head of the 50,000-member Knoxville diocese in 1999.He will take over the larger Louisville archdiocese of 200,000 Catholics and also will coordinate the work of the church in Kentucky and Tennessee. Kentucky includes the Louisville archdiocese and three smaller dioceses in Owensboro, Covington and Lexington; Tennessee includes dioceses in Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville.Kurtz also will serve as chairman of the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, the policy and lobbying arm of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.Kurtz has a master’s degree in social work and has been active in social services operated by Catholic agencies, according to a biography on the Knoxville diocese’s Web site.
