MPAC TO RELEASE SPECIAL REPORT ON MUSLIM AMERICAN YOUTH AT FORUM IN WASHINGTON, DC
(Washington, DC - 6/6/07) -- On Thursday, June 7, the Muslim Public Affairs Council will release a special report on Muslim American youth and identity formation in an age of terrorism and Islamophobia, during a forum in Washington, DC.Co-sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance, the forum will a briefing on the report from MPAC Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati, and include remarks from Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), Suzie Armstrong (Vice President, Interfaith Alliance), and Imam Mohamed Magid (All Dulles Area Muslim Society).Entitled The Impact of 9/11 on Muslim American Young People: Forming National and Religious Identity in the Age of Terrorism and Islamophobia, the special report provides analysis and recommendations to government officials, media professionals and universities to bolster integration and prevent radicalization of Muslim Americanyouth.Major recommendations outlined in the report include:- Develop a support infrastructure for Muslim students in U.S. college campuses, including an institutionally supported Muslim religious advisor funded, staffed and certified by the university to ensure the applicability of the chaplain's contributions are germaine to each campus. - Create a U.S. government inter-agency Muslim American Youth Advisory Board of student leaders and young professionals.- Publicize the relationship with Muslim American community leaders to re-assure the American public of the close partnership between the Muslim American community and its government partners.- Deter Islamophobia in the media through seminars for anchors and producers to be introduced to authentic approaches to conversations about extremism and violence among Muslims to better engage an Muslim American perspective, and introduce broad scale ad campaigns showing the value of diversity and pluralism).The report frames the issues related to the Muslim youth in the West in a way that is consistent with realities on the ground and emphasizes the distinction between the American and European experiences, and provides recommendations to Muslim American institutions, government and the media in their efforts to engage young Muslims in order to enhance their integration and reduce the possibility for radicalization.A recent Pew Research Center Study http://www.mpac.org/article.php?id=508 (http://e2ma.net/go/617878060/514700/17270697/goto:http://www.mpac.org/article.php?id=508)> found that Muslim Americans constitute a growing and increasingly important segment of American society.
