Award Winning Fiction
Please join us at Carmichael's Bookstore on Frankfort Avenue Friday, April 4th at 7 PM for a reading by talented young writer Tony D'Souza. D'Souza's first novel, Whiteman, was widely praised and won a prize for First Fiction. His new novel,The Konkans, tells the story of a young man whose American mother and Indian father struggle to embrace America while preserving their own cultural heritage. The narrator's father is a member of a mostly Catholic ethnic group from west India called the Konkans.

The Konkans were created when the Portuguese conquered the west coast of India in the 16th century and Jesuits captured the local Hindus and rubbed their mouths with raw pork, transforming them into untouchables. The Roman Catholic church embraced these outcasts and baptized them, forming the Konkan ethnic group that is a significant minority in and around Goa, India today.

D'Souza's novel is a series of stories, funny, romantic, and often heart-breaking, of how each family member finds his place in the world. Please come out and hear this talented new voice in fiction.
